where wilderness meets timeless style

hatari lodge

Giraffes pass by your window. Warthogs linger in the grass. Once the setting of the film Hatari!, the lodge carries that ‘60’s Hollywood’ spirit, reimagined through design, craft and a deep sense of place. Each space is individually created, with pieces crafted by women from the local community.

Between Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro, Hatari offers a different way of being in this landscape. Days slow down here. Meals reflect what is grown nearby. This is not just where you stay. It’s how you begin to experience the true Africa.

our rooms

Hatari’s rooms are part of the lodge’s character. Inspired by a distinctive African Art déco spirit, they bring together strong colours, rich texture and unique designs for this place. Much of what you see has been embroidered or hand-crafted by craftsmen- and women from the local village, making every room part of a wider story of artistry and individuality.
deluxe room

Each of the nine Deluxe Rooms has its own personality. More intimate in scale, they are designed for atmosphere: fireplaces for cool evenings, private terraces, and views towards Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro. They offer 24/7 electricity, wifi, king-size beds dressed in fine cotton linen, and a style that feels playful, expressive and entirely unique.

villas

For those wanting space and privacy, the six spacious suites can be combined to create three private villas – ideal for families. The villas offer a more expansive way to stay, with generous bathrooms with bath tubs, fireplaces, lounge & dining area and private outdoor spaces featuring sweeping views towards Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.

heritage cuisine

wondergarden is the living heart of Hatari’s philosophy

At Hatari, meals are shaped by the Slow Food principles of good, clean and fair food. Fresh, seasonal ingredients from Wondergarden and nearby farmers inspire a cuisine that is refined, expressive and quietly extraordinary — bringing rare heritage foods to the table with beauty and depth.

You will be introduced to flavours you are unlikely to have tasted before — one of the reasons Hatari’s cuisine is spoken of far beyond Tanzania. Enjoy our scrumptious breakfast buffet, 3-course lunches and dinners in front of the fireplace or on the veranda looking out onto the meadow.

Here, regeneration is not an abstract idea, but something you can walk through, taste and understand. Working with local small-scale farmers, Wondergarden grows, sources and processes indigenous ingredients in ways that support biodiversity, strengthen local livelihoods and return forgotten foods to the table.

At Hatari, you have the unique opportunity to visit the gardens themselves — to see where the food you eat is grown, meet the people behind it, and experience Tanzania through its landscapes, flavours and communities. It is a rare way of exploring: one that brings you closer to the land.

These are not simply gardens, but one of the rarest ways to experience and understand Tanzania.

hatari safari

No lines of vehicles, but birdsong, open space and the quiet presence of wildlife. Not rushed, not crowded, but considered and aware. At Hatari, safari remains something more intimate — shaped by beauty, history and a slower rhythm of being in the wild.

Just an hour from Kilimanjaro Airport, yet far removed from the usual circuit, Hatari offers a rarer sense of wilderness in comfort and style. Explore Arusha National Park — home to colobus monkeys, forest elephants and the flamingo-covered Momella lakes. Move on foot with a wildlife ranger, or by classic Mercedes G-Wagon, across the slopes of Mount Meru and through landscapes that still feel beautifully unhurried.

mt meru game drive + hike
On the slopes of Mount Meru, Arusha National Park offers a rarer kind of adventure — one of towering forest, open glades and wildlife encountered without the usual crowds. Giraffe move quietly through the landscape, colobus monkeys leap through the canopy, butterflies drift through the clearings, and forest elephants remain one of the park’s great, elusive presences. Home to some of the tallest trees in Africa, this is a place best experienced slowly: on foot with a ranger, or by classic G-Wagon, with the sense that the wild is unfolding around you rather than being chased.
momella lakes + canoeing

The Momella Lakes offer one of the gentlest and most beautiful ways to experience Arusha National Park. Beneath Mount Meru, flamingos gather on the alkaline waters, hippos drift quietly through the shallows, and birdlife fills the air. Explore by canoe for a closer, quieter encounter, or on foot for a slower experience of the landscape — unhurried, spacious and far removed from the usual rhythm of safari.

tululusia waterfall walk

Tululusia is one of Arusha National Park’s most remarkable walks — a journey through forest, meadow and open clearings to the waterfall itself. Along the way, buffalo and giraffe are often seen, as well as the impressive indigenous flora. With the slopes of Mount Meru rising around you, it is a quieter, more intimate kind of safari, shaped by movement, birdsong and the gratifying feeling of discovery when you reach the hidden waterfalls.
