Walking the corridors between two mountains, sensing how everything connects — soil, seed, rain, glacier, community, cuisine. This is regenerative safari. Not a spectacle. A participation.

Hatari Lodge and Shumata Camp are positioned along this corridor – between Arusha National Park and Amboseli — not as destinations that interrupt the wilderness, but as threshold places where you, the traveller learns to read it.

WHY THIS PAGE EXISTS

We would rather be questioned than congratulated.

Regenerative travel attracts beautiful language. The risk is that the language outruns the practice – that a place sounds restorative long before it is. So we have written down, in plain terms, the three ways an operation like ours can quietly betray the very place it claims to serve, and what we do to guard against each.

None of this belongs on a homepage. Leading with what we refuse reads as defence before there is anything to defend. It belongs here, one click deeper, for the traveller who researches before they trust – and who wants something to hold us to.

THREE WAYS TO GET THIS WRONG.

The standard · No washing of any kind

The industry has begun to name the first. The second is arriving. The third, as far as we know, no certification yet audits – so we named it ourselves.

Greenwashing

Environmental claims that outrun verifiable practice. Frameworks for this now exist, and we welcome them. We are undergoing independent regenerative certification and will publish the results in full — whatever they show.

Community Washing

Communities used as marketing assets — photographed, named, thanked — without genuine economic return or a real say in decisions. It is beginning to be named across the industry, though rarely yet audited. Our answer is structural: the land and the farms stay with the people who hold them. We own neither. We build a platform, not a dependency.

Culture Washing

The third category, and the one no audit catches. An operation can do everything right on paper and still, slowly, hollow out the culture it works with. Food traditions fade. The young people leave. Knowledge built over generations quietly disappears. A community can grow materially richer and culturally poorer in the same decade — and no certificate would notice. We named this culture washing because nobody was asking the question that catches it: are we making this culture more alive than we found it?

PRACTICE, NOT PROMISE.

What we do about it

1. The land stays with its people

No lease. No acquisition. No ownership that displaces the communities who cultivate the land. It belongs to the people who have always worked it – and so does its future.

2. Nothing artificial, ever

No mono-cropping. No synthetic fertilisers, pesticides or herbicides. Multi-layered growing that feeds the soil microbiome, supports pollinators, and keeps the corridor connected.

3. Food as living knowledge

Every dish carries a named garden, a named grower, a native food with generations of tribal knowledge behind it. We call this Culinary Conservation – and it is the heart of how we work.

4. Held to account, openly

We invite the questions most operators avoid. We are certifying independently and will publish what the audit finds. Until then, the honest starting point is simple: come and see for yourself.
