Under the Kilimanjaro Skies
Shu'mata Camp
Where the Earth Meets the Heavens
Shu’mata Camp is an elevated, luxury tented retreat perched on a ridge in the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, within the vast Amboseli ecosystem. Named after the Maasai word for "heaven" or "elevation," the camp offers a 360-degree vantage point where the savannah meets the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. This is a place where the golden age of safari is honoured through nostalgic Hemingway-style design, set within a vital, unfenced corridor for the last great elephant tuskers.
An Elevated Perspective on the Maasai Steppe: At Shu’mata, we invite you to find your frequency in a landscape of transcendent beauty. Set high above the plains, our camp serves as a private window into a world where wildlife and ancient traditions coexist in a surviving remnant of the African paradise. Here, the air is thinner, the views are wider, and the connection to the land is absolute.

The Sanctuary: Living the Hemingway Legacy
Chic Nostalgia Meets the High Plains: Our accommodation is a tribute to the bygone era of the 1920s – a fusion of classic Hemingway style and vibrant Maasai and Arabic influences.
Seven spacious safari tents line the ridge, each en-suite and uniquely furnished with traditional beds, dressing tables, and charming lockable trunks.
The en-suite bathrooms are a work of art, blending Hundertwasser-inspired architecture with Tuareg and Maasai décor, featuring open-air showers that allow you to wash under the starlight.

Dining
A Culinary Conversation with the Land
Heritage on a Plate: Dining at Shu’mata is an extension of our regenerative philosophy. Our menus are built on the foundations of "Heritage Food," sourced directly from our sister company, Wondergarden Ltd, and a network of over 1,500 local farmers. By choosing native, chemical-free ingredients, we not only restore the soil but also protect the delicate ecosystem that sustains the elephant herds. Every meal is a celebration of the "free, fair, and good" food that defines the soul of Hatari Travel.
