shu’mata means heaven.

shu'mata camp

Shu’mata, meaning “Heaven” in Maasai, is a place of immense space and profound tranquility.

Beneath Kilimanjaro, overlooking Maasai land and the open elephant country of the Amboseli ecosystem, it offers a kind of escape that is becoming increasingly hard to find. With a seemingly endless horizon, the landscape feels entirely your own. Each tent is individually designed, with a distinctive Maasai spirit and a quiet luxury.

The food carries the same sense of care and individuality, bringing pleasure and surprise to each day. Shu’mata is not simply a place to stay, but a place to disappear into.

Solitude, beauty and a rare closeness to the landscape around you.

under the maasai skies
Shu’mata Camp stands in one of the last great open landscapes of Northern Tanzania, where elephants, giraffe, wildebeest and ostrich still move beneath vast skies and across unfenced plains.

Game drives here feel different. There are no lines of vehicles and no sense of spectacle. Just the quiet privilege of moving through elephant country with space, silence and the landscape all around you.

In partnership with local Maasai communities, Shu’mata helps protect this vital elephant corridor within the Enduimet Wildlife Management Area, ensuring that tourism supports both the people who live here and the wildlife that depends on this land remaining open and connected. This is safari at its most spacious. Shaped by beauty, stillness and the rare feeling of having the wild almost to yourself.

naturalist walk in maasai land

Walk the landscape with a Maasai naturalist and it begins to reveal itself differently.

Flora, fauna and the subtle signs of the bush are understood not as passing detail, but as part of a living body of knowledge shaped over generations.

Plants, tracks, wildlife and the smallest movements in the land take on new meaning as the walk unfolds. It is a slower, more attentive way of experiencing the bush — rich in story, observation and the quiet privilege of being guided by those who know it best.

kilimanjaro shira plateau hike
For those drawn higher, the Shira Plateau offers one of Kilimanjaro’s most exhilarating perspectives. The walk reveals a wilder, more elemental side of the mountain, with open heathland, volcanic textures, huge skies and the rare experience of standing above the everyday world.

The reward is not only the view, but the pause that comes with it: fresh hibiscus juice, or a gin with homemade tonic infused with ingredients found on Kilimanjaro, served with delicious, heritage food snacks.

There is truly no better feeling than the deep pleasure of having earned the view.

amboseli ecosystem game drive

Across West Kili and towards Amboseli, this is elephant country on a grand scale. Giraffe, wildebeest and ostrich move through a landscape of vast open plains beneath Kilimanjaro’s constant presence.

Game drives here feel wonderfully different from the usual circuit. There is no sense of rush, no procession of vehicles, only the quiet privilege of moving through the land with time to look properly. A morning picnic out on the plains adds another layer to the experience — coffee, breakfast and wildlife under an immense sky, with little around you but silence and distance.

wondergarden is the living heart of Hatari’s philosophy

our luxury tents

Set along the ridge with sweeping views towards Kilimanjaro, Shu’mata’s seven safari tents are designed for those who want beauty, privacy and the quiet thrill of sleeping close to the wild.

Each tent is individually furnished, drawing on the romance of an earlier safari age while layering in Maasai and North African influences through texture, craft and detail. Traditional beds, dressing tables, lockable trunks and artful en-suite bathrooms create a feeling that is both deeply comfortable and entirely distinctive, while open-air showers allow you to wash beneath the stars.

At first light, coffee or tea can be brought to your tent, so that the day begins where it should — with Kilimanjaro on the horizon and the landscape still half asleep.
